In the summer, smoothies are my go-to recovery meal of choice to help cool-down my internal body temperature. In the winter, smoothies don't fly too well with my already cold body! Instead, I like to whip up this hearty miso soup, which especially hits the spot after long runs in the frigid temperatures as we did this past Saturday. With this soup you can adjust the quantities of the fillings as desired, but since I like my soups on the hearty side I tend to squeeze in as many "fillings" as possible :) This soup provides electrolytes and fluids to assist with rehydration, carbohydrate and protein to jumpstart the recovery process, is chock full of nutrients and even serves as a source of probiotics (from the miso). Of course, don't just limit your enjoyment to after a workout - this also serves as a go-to quick meal for me when I'm running short on time.
Every year I pick out a quote to set the tone for the year. I mainly do this from a training perspective, but I like to think whatever it is I am able to adopt across all walks of my life. I put the quote atop of my goals sheet that I share with my coach but also in a prominent location that I will see frequently as a reminder. When I submitted my 2018 goals sheet to my coach back in mid-November, it looked fairly barren compared to years past. I hadn't yet picked out my quote, most of my races had question marks next to them and I set three simple goals (more on those in another post). Anyway, the following quote is one I ran across months ago and have had sitting prominently on my bike desk to view every-time I ride the trainer. Each time I ride, I re-read it aloud and think about what I am doing to make the most of each day:
"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company ... a church ... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude ... I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you ... we are in charge of our Attitudes."
Thinking forward to the year ahead, I want to continue to challenge myself by challenging my attitude in face of different situations.
I can choose to fear change and challenge or choose to embrace it.
I can view food as an enemy or chore, or a daily blessing and opportunity to nourish my body.
I can make excuses as to why "I can't" or look for reasons as to why I can.
I can choose to judge others or instead lift them up with compassion and love.
I can view myself or my training as "never good enough" or instead, pat myself on the back for doing the best that I can.
